Hawthorn Psychology provides comprehensive autism assessments for children between the ages of 6 and 18 years. All assessments are multidisciplinary (involving Psychology and Speech and Language Therapy or Occupational Therapy) and follow best practice international guidelines in relation to the assessment of autism.

All multidisciplinary team members have extensive experience in administering autism assessments both for the HSE and privately according to best practice guidelines. Autism assessments and reports completed by Hawthorn Psychology meet criteria for assessment required by the HSE and the Department of Education.

The assessment process involves the following stages:

  • Completion of two questionnaires detailing information in relation to your child: a Parent/Guardian Questionnaire and a Teacher Questionnaire.
  • A clinical interview conducted by the psychologist with parent(s)/guardian(s), followed by administration of an autism-specific parent interview, i.e., the Autism Diagnostic Interview – Revised (ADIR). This will be completed remotely either by video or tele-conference (approximate time 3 hours, including 20-minute break).
  • Administration of a cognitive assessment with your child in the clinic. A clinical interview will also be conducted with adolescents. Completed by the Psychologist (approximate time 1 – 2 hours).
  • Administration of a semi-structured observational assessment of social communication and behaviour, i.e., the Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule 2nd Edition (ADOS-2). Completed by the psychologist and the Speech and Language Therapist or Occupational Therapist (approximate time 40 – 60 minutes).
  • Feedback session with parent(s)/guardian(s) will generally take place approximately 2 – 3 weeks following completion of assessment (however, in certain circumstances, additional time may be required).  This will focus on the conclusion of the assessment, the child’s overall needs and supports required.
  • A comprehensive and detailed report will be completed approximately 4 – 6 weeks after the feedback session.
